Necrotic Enteritis In Poultry

Necrotic Enteritis in Poultry is a bacterial disease that is caused by Clostridium perforingenes organism in poultry. It is the most devastating disease for poultry due to the huge economic impact of around 6-7 billion us dollars globally. It always occurred with Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI).

Susceptible Ages

  • All ages are affected by NE in poultry. But older birds are more susceptible than younger birds.

  • Laying hen mostly affected due to intake mass feed regularly that contain fishmeal/ meat bone protein concentration which source of clostridium perfringenes organism.

Types of Necrotic Enteritis

  • Acute Infection: It occurred suddenly especially in late winter when temperature & day length increase. temperature varies at day time 24-25 ° C & night temperature varies 12-14 ° C

Symptoms of Necrotic Enteritis In poultry

in spite of enteritis, diarrhea is not common a symptoms unless secondary infections occur. There is maybe drooling of saliva from the beak. may appetite become very poor, In acute cases, birds may die in 1 to 3 days. brown to blackish color feces are common symptoms in subclinical cases.

but in chronic cases, there is emaciation and death around 7 th day. In mild cases, there are may reduce FCR and weight gain.

Mode Of Action

Clostridium perforingenes are common in the intestine of broilers after the age of 2 weeks. Being a spore-forming organism, it can survive for months in the soil, litter, equipment, and ordinary disinfection.

Infection may enter by faecal oral route through field and water flies, fish meal, bone meal and meat meal.

Necrotic Enteritis Treatment

lincomycin plus colistin plus zinc bacitracin works better for necrotic enteritis. bacitracin methylene disalycylate (BMD) and narasin could effectively control necrotic in broiler and layer chicken.

Infected rooms and equipment may be cleaned with 1:200 to 1: 500 dilution of caustic soda ( sodium hydroxide) in water. Lysol and phenol are less effective.

Role of Probiotics in Necrotic Enteritis Treatment]

The presence of lactobacillus acidophilus and streptococcus faecalis in the intestine prevented mortality in the chicken challenge by C. perfringenes whereas 50% of germ-free chicken died on a similar challenge (Faukuta 1991).

Prevention

  • Birds kept on weird floor are likely to suffer from necrotic enteritis due to reduced faecal oral infection.
  • The use of good quality feed and supplementation with antibiotics and feed additives are known to prevent the disease.
  • In Australia, The disease was treated by administrating 25g Oxytetracycline per 40g gallons of water for two days.

Key points

  • Finding of enteritis in upper part of small intestines with necrosis of mucosa in large patches.
  • Presence of large bacilli in the smears of necrotic tissue
  • The absence of lesions in the caeca, liver, liver, and spleen is found in necrotic enteritis cases caused by C.colinum.
