Coccidiosis In Chicks: Postmortem Findings

Coccidiosis is a protozoan disease which is caused by Emeria spp in poultry. Its very important disease that are more relationship with economy.

More weight loss, decreased FCR of feed, expensive treatment cost are best devastating point of view in poultry.

There are seven Emeria spp in poultry which causing disease different location of intestine in poultry. causing watery diarrhoea, undigested feed particles in faeces & bloody diarrhoea are mostly common signs of coccidiosis.

It is normal inhabitant at intestinal tract of poultry. Its have complex life cycle that are developed into the host within 6-7 days.

Possible Causes

1.Day-old chicks do not normally derive passively transferred protective immunity from the hen and birds of any age are susceptible to coccidiosis.

2. Failure to prevent coccidiosis by using coccidiostat in feed or absence coccidiostat in pre starter/starter feed.

Other common causes associated with like environmental temperature, wet litter, humid weather, fail to run good shuttle program of coccidiostat etc.

Emeria spp infection occurred at any age of poultry between 01-180 days in poultry.

Cecum containing bloody stool absence in postmortem finding in chicks at 3-4 days due to Emeria tenella needs one sexual life cycle which are impossible before 6 days.

Now take a look postmortem findings that are collected from 04 days broiler chicks.

It is the main differentiate point from necrotic enteritis to coccidiosis ibn poultry. liver became strong orange or yellowish reduced size in necrotic enteritis but in coccidiosis its completely opposite.
