FDA PROHIBITED DRUGS FOR POULTRY

FDA (Food and Drug Administrator) prohibited drug list has been updating all year round in poultry. There are several reasons for the prohibition of drugs on chicken or another animal due to public health concerns. It is advising that the FDA prohibited drug list be checked on a regular basis for updates as it is subject to change. We are going to discuss the top six FDA prohibited drugs for poultry below

In the United States, the FDA has established a list of drugs or drug classes that are either completely prohibited or prohibited from extra-label drug use (ELDU) in food-producing animals.

1. Chloramphenicol

Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic broad-spectrum antibiotic that acts on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In some instances, It acts on spirochetes and Rickettsia. It uses a broad spectrum of antibiotics which works on fowl typhoid, fowl cholera and other infection in poultry. It is available as a 1-20% oral solution in some countries.

Idiosyncratic, non-dose dependent, irreversible, aplastic anemia

2. Metronidazole

Primarily, Metronidazole is an imidazole which acts on the protozoa, but it is shown antibacterial activity in some cases. It has a versatile use in poultry, especially southern Asia. It uses using for treat non- specific diarrhea, intestinal coccidiosis, the anaerobic intestinal problem in poultry. But, It is widely used in bacterial vaginal infection, bacteria associated colitis and other soft-tissue complication.

It is sometimes, using as an anticoccidial medication in poultry practice but, it is ineffective totally.

3. Fluoroquinolones

quinolones are antibiotics That are considered as a family of fluoroquinolones? It is a broad-spectrum bactericidal agent. It has a lot of use in poultry to control bacterial infection in poultry. The common quinolones antibiotics are norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, marbofloxacin. The fluoroquinolones are adopted on poultry CRD, CCRD, Navel ill infection, colibacillosis, and other common salmonella and E.coli infection.

4. Cephalosporins

Cephalosporins are semi-synthetic broad-spectrum Beta-lactamase antibiotics that produce from a fungus named acremonium. The acremonium knew as cephalosporin. The common cephalosporins are using in poultry is cephalexin, ceftiofur sodium, ceftriaxone, cefoperazone, etc. It is active against the most important poultry diseases are Fowl typhoid, pullorum disease, colibacillosis, fowl cholera, CRD, etc.

Ceftiofur sodium is using a limited purpose on label use in a specific direction. It is used on early chicks mortality applying subcutaneous route by the FDA labeling direction. Extra label using on adult prohibited or need FDA approval by the filling special requirements

5. Vancomycin

Vancomycin is glycopeptide antibiotics which are considered as the last line treatment of gram-positive bacterial infection in poultry and human. It is active against streptococcus, staphylococcus and clostridium app in poultry.

6. Adamantane

Adamantine is a neuraminidase type antiviral class of drugs that functions on the M2 protein channel of Avian Influenza type A virus but not active in type influenza virus. There are the most common antiviral drugs derived from it. The drugs are amantadine and rimantadine.  Amantadine can be used in controlling, prophylaxis and treating avian influenza in poultry.

Some other types of drug also prohibited by the FDA in the united state. These are the following-

  • Clenbuterol- B-adrenergic toxicity
  • Diethylstilbestrol (DES)-Reproductive tract abnormalities and tumors in female offspring, infertility
  • Nitrofurans- including topical applications Potential for carcinogenesis
  • Gentian Violet – prohibited from use in feed Human food safety has not been assessed
