Fowl Pox Symptoms
In chickens, Fowl Pox Symptoms caused by virus belong to avipoxvirus genus out of eight genera of subfamily chordopoxvirinae. It is mainly caused by the fowl pox virus (FWPV).
Types of Fowl Pox Symptoms
Symptoms of fowl pox depend on the location of lesion on the body part in chicken. The fowl pox may occur in one of the three clinical forms.
Cutaneous form
It is also called dry pox in chickens. the cutaneous form of fowl pox characterized by the formation of small nodules on the hairless parts of the body such as combs, wattles, and skin of the face.


The nodules are yellowish which later become brownish and ultimately became blackish. lastly, the growths off as scabs in about 2 weeks.
Diphtheric From
this type of form is also called wet pox in chicken. It is characterized by the yellowish, cheese-like materials deposited on the mucosa of the tongue, palate, or laryngeal orifice.

these diphtheritic deposits leave the ulcerated area after removal. In severe form, it may spread into the trachea.
Ocular Form
In ocular form, there is conjunctivitis and cheesy exudate accumulates under the eyelids. the eyelids stick together and may ultimately cause blindness. sometimes, the infection may spread into the nasal cavity or infraorbital sinus, causing its swelling.
both the kidneys may become swollen 10-14 days post-infection and reveal miliary nodules. pneumonia may be produced by the Avipox virus infecting canaries.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for fowl pox. but post-infective care should be taken which is suppressed the severity of the disease.
Diphtheric From Treatment
- Provide Vitamin A
- Antum tart and variolinum
- Mechanically removal of cheesy mass
- Use of iodine disinfectants in water .
Dry pox/ Cutaneous Form Treatment
- Put need paste on dry scabs
- Neem decoction
- Vitamin A in water
- Giving CTC in feed
What is remedy if fowl pox comes?
no allopathy drug works it is preferred to give homeopathy like antum tart in morning water and varilinum in evening water. plus decoction or kara of neem water.
In wet pox, cheesy mass in the opening of the trachea is removed by some skilled laborers by removing feathers and using its tip to remove the caseous mass. however, for wet pox vitamin, a can be supplemented.
What to do, if fowl pox is repeating Every Flock?
Generally, disease coincides with mosquitoes’ breeding season eg from May to August. but many farmers raise desi birds or sexing errors like males in the same vicinity and their comb gets affected by fowlpox generally it is recommended to sell males as early as possible.
Vaccination
- Don’t give pigeon pox before 4 weeks.
- Don’t keep sex errors males with females Rev variant strains associated with fowl pox so use variant strain of fowl pox
How to use what vaccine ?
In endemic areas tissue. Culture at a 5-day old chick which gives immunity up to 6 weeks then repeats 6 weeks combine both pigeon pox and fowl pox and give by wing web Repeat fowl pox booster at 85 days.
Broilers Single dose of tissue culture 5 days. Precaution PL sees no of vaccine takes after 7 to 10 days at the site.
diphtheritic type or wet pox -generally question comes if such type of pox lesions appears what type of pox vaccine is recommended-
we can use pigeon pox as well as fowlpox vaccine is hard and works for a longer duration this vaccine can be given twice at 21 to 35 days followed by 90 days
If the farm endemic with fowl pox, How to use what vaccine?
Give the first vaccine of pigeon pox on 20 to 30 days followed by fowl pox on 85 t0 90 days.
many times gangrenous dermatitis (gd) or chicken infectious anemia viruses (cav ) comes at 55 days and continues up to 90 days and vaccines like r2b and fowl case are missed-
in such cases, r2b and fowlpox are mixed together and given a single shot. though it is stressful and should not be given in routine any harm if we are not left with any other option.
